Description

If Space Opera has a Queen, she must surely be Leigh Brackett. Although her stories appeared in many of the pulps, for her pulp work she's perhaps most closely associated with Fiction House's Planet Stories.

Among the art that our friendly neighborhood UPS man delivered to us two days ago was this double-page spread from the Fall 1943 issue of Planet Stories, for Brackett's tale, "Thralls of the Endless Night." The artist is Robert "Bob" Leydenfrost, who was the stepson of fellow Planet Stories artist Alexander Leydenfrost. When Alexander mostly left the pulp market in late 1942 and moved into slicks, his sons, Bob and Harry, provided illustrations for a few issues of Planet Stories, in a similar style.
