DescriptionThe earliest science fiction pulp illustration delivered last week by our friendly neighborhood UPS man was this one. Inaugurating Dold Day, here's an illo by artist Elliott Dold. From 1934 to 1937, he was the leading interior illustrator for Astounding Stories. This one is from the October 1935 issue of Astounding, illustrating "Night" by John W. Campbell (prior to his ascending to the editorship of that magazine). Unfortunately, it's the right half of a double-page spread, but it stands well on its own and gives me something to hunt for!My friend Bob Weinberg used to tell the story of a SF con in Philadelphia in the 1960's, where some guy walked in with a few dozen pieces by Dold, offering them for sale for $1 each. Sadly, no one bought any; at that time, Bob wasn't buying original art. Many years later, Bob tried to track those pieces down, but without any luck. He feared that the owner had tossed them away after not selling any. I continue to hope that they'll resurface some day! Social/Sharing |

Great find! Hopefully more will see the light of day (just not direct sunlight).
