DescriptionSo excited to finally get a Garney Cap page... Cap #454 pages #18-19 double page spread! This is huge (21x17)! What's special about these two pages?* This is the last battle scene, the last double page spread of the last issue of Volume One. * We spoke with Garney for an upcoming podcast and he shared his thoughts on this specific DPS... "That's one of my favorite pieces of work. Yeah, in doing that was a real opportunity I felt, a visual opportunity, to really create a feeling of the character that I thought he should represent personally... I wanted it just to be the absolute essence of him. It was always shot underneath, as if you were a little kid looking up at him. And his star was big and emblazon across the chest and he was larger than life... His chin is up and he just so indefatigable. He's facing off against these ridiculous odds... I wanted it to feel like the courage in him... is represented in the visual graphic. Where it is not so much his facial personality, his identity, but his inner identity, everything that you would hope Captain America as an entity unto itself would represent." Well... in my humble opinion, he nailed it and I couldn't be more pleased to have this to frame. Here is the interview: https://captainamericacomicbookfans.wordpress.com/2021/07/06/39-interview-with-ron-garney-legendary-cap-artist * At the very bottom, inker Scott Koblish wrote, "Eat your heart out, Rob" and signed his name. This was a gentle poke at the incoming artist for Volume Two, Rob Liefeld. If you love Cap, come hang with fellow Cap fans (including several artists, like Scott Koblish) at https://www.facebook.com/groups/captainamericacomicbookfans/ I also have a Cap comic book podcast where I interview several artists (like Ron Garney): https://captainamericacomicbookfans.com Social/Sharing |

They were so good that Double breasted cap was just an interruption to their run as they were brought back in Heroes Return For a new Captain America #1 relaunch. This is grand storytelling in that Kirby tradition.

Thanks! Speaking of an interuption, during my interview with Garney, he revealed Waid wanted to start Volume 3 with a nod to picking up where they left off with 454 but didn't get approved. Was happy to see the team come back!

In my opinion, this was the best and greatest storyline in the history of Captain America. Waid's writing was phenomenal. Glad this piece of history found such a good home!

I have a well worn copy of this issue, it was the first of this run I picked up and the first cap comic that drew me into the character. A perfect send off, and encapsulation of the character overall and this DPS is definitely an exclamation point. Congrats!

Oh! And I love your insights from Ron and the margin notes are awesome to see that the creators had the same feelings as us fans.

Even though I've moved on to pencilling andinking my own stuff, I don't know if I could top this! Ron's spectacular. I had so much fun inking this book (and this spread especially)-

Allegedly Rob ate his heart out when he looked at this, which might explain his lifeless take on Cap.
