Description

Swamp Thing (Vol.1) #9 page 4
"The Stalker from Beyond"

Back in the early '80s, one of the first things I would search for, in any comic book store's back issue bins, was the "S" box for Wrightson Swamp Thing.
Flash forward almost 40 years, it's hard for me to fathom having a page from the original classic run. Big bucket list check √
One of the most beautiful Abby pages ever drawn!

DC Comics 1974
11" x 17"
Signed by Bernie

Thanks Glen!

Beautiful windswept east coast beach setting.  The brushwork gives us the sense of the overpowering force of nature.  The elegant and luminous figure of Abbey is drawn with a very fine line and gives us a glimpse of what beauty the word can offer.  It is all the more tragic and horrific that they are interrupted by man made constructs of an office job calling Matthew back to work.

As dense as the text is on this page, still the only thing I see is that sublime and masterful linework.  I've been doing this for 40 years and I still haven't scored a vintage Wrightson piece.  With this single acquistion, you have put my collection to shame while elevating yours.  I bow humbly  before you, filled with respect and envy.

Agreed, Abby is gorgeous here. What a fantastic Bernie Wrightson emotionally charged scene. He was so good at them, and it's evident here. And what wonderful light source and shading work. Exactly what you want from him. Great score. Big congrats on checking a big one off of the list!

No monsters, no horror, no big effects: pure art! Bernie Wrightson demonstrates how subtle he could be. His handling of the winter conditions at the beach (sky, water and plants) is breathtaking... And this page sports one of the only touches of humor of the whole series... A counterpoint if ever there was one!

Abby in that 3rd panel, so scrumptious. Worth the price of admission all on its own!

Rick - monstrous congrats are due here, my friend; what an incredible add to your collection!  I don't know where to start - the linework EVERYWHERE here is incredible - the figures, especially.  Yes, Abigail is breathtaking in panel 3, but I was immediately struck by Matthew in panel 1, and what a pinnacle Wrightson example you have there, at his absolute Frazetta-like best; the musculature, the brushwork, the shading - just amazing.  The elements themselves are well-represented, too (it was this level of "illustration" that distinguished so much of Berni's work), and in that last panel you get not only a bit of primal Wrightson (with Matthew cursing the heavens) but smooth Wrightson, in the black suit and the wringing out of the pants.  AND it's signed by Bernie ("inside" the page, which I like here, and thankfully not over too much art :) ).  Great score, Rick!  Sincere congrats!

That line work is so sublime.  Somehow looks so detailed and impressive but also simple and elegant at the same time.  Not too many can pull that off.  Not hard to see why Whightson's Wrightson.  Congrats!

Outstanding page by the master: the first panel alone is worth the price of admission and those shots of Abby in the bottom tier are to die for!
