DescriptionSome uncertainty exists about the maiden name of William Henry Hunt's mother. She is traditionally said to be Judith Holloway (1760 - 1842). The problem is that Hunt is also said to have married his first cousin, Sarah Holloway (1812-1857) and that Hunt's mother was the sister of Sarah's mother. But, Sarah's mother was Miriam Weak, the wife of Daniel Holloway of Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire, England, where the Duke of Wellington's estate was located. There are two scenarios which could be consistent with the artist and his wife being first cousins: (1) That Hunt's mother was a sister of Daniel Holloway or (2) that Judith's maiden name was Judith Weak, sister of Miriam. But there is no evidence that Daniel Holloway had a sister named Judith. A Judith Keep married a John Hunt, so it might be that there was a misspelling of her maiden name. But the marriage between John Hunt and Judith Keep did not occur until 1808, which was 18 years after William Henry Hunt was born. It is possible that the artist was illegitimate or that Judith Keep was a second marriage for John Hunt, making her a step-mother of William Henry. If the latter is true, Hunt might not have married a cousin by blood but one by marriage. And it is certain based on birth records that the artist's birth mother was named Judith, not so common a given name in early 19th century London that one would expect both a natural and a step-mother to share that name. These are just a few of the complications surrounding the Hunt family. Hunt's brother, Thomas James Hunt, married a sister of William Henry's wife. They had a daughter who died fairly young. The widow of this niece of William Henry Hunt then married another of the artist's nieces, who was the daughter of one of Hunt's sisters, Sophia. It's said that Hunt's mother was very kind, which seems consistent with the appearance of the woman depicted in this drawing. The drawing is identified by an inscription on the rear as the mother of William Henry Hunt. Another portrait of an elderly woman is also identifed as Hunt's mother -- these are the only two portraits said to show Judith Hunt. Social/Sharing |
