Description

Legends of the Dark Knight #129 (May 2000) original cover painting for "The Arrow and the Bat Part 3: The Failure". This 5 story arc spanning issues 127 - 131 was a rare crossover featuring Oliver Queen as Green Arrow and Bruce Wayne as the Dark Knight. This cover is the only one not to feature Batman but highlights one of Master Haim's assassins attacking Ollie. This painting (and all 5 for this story) was done by master painter Hugh Fleming. I love the photorealism in this painting, and you can almost feel Ollie's pain by just looking at his face as the assassin stares him down. Hugh is quite the perfectionist and was not happy with some minor imperfections from storage and age, so he did some minor touch ups prior to shipping it to me. The painting is signed from when he did in 1999 in the lower right corner. Accomplished in acrylics on Bainbridge Board Number 80, with dimensions of 15" wide by 22.5" high. I also was fortunate to work with a CGC facilitator so that Hugh could sign the published book and allow me to get the yellow signature series label. As of today, this is the only CGC copy period for this book, also making it the only Signature Series copy! As a bonus, since this was the only cover not featuring Batman, I asked Hugh to sketch a Batman remarque for me. So I basically addressed the issue of no Batman, at least on the published book with CGC grading.

There is another interesting story about this painting that was discussed on the podcast I did back in April with CAF. When these paintings were initially offered, this one was not included. I, of course, inquired since I was quite interested in having the full arc (imagine the amazing framing job!), and Hugh for some reason had just not offered it initially. He was happy to sell it, hence allowing me to complete the set.

I love it, it's a beautiful painting. But given that it's a Robin Hood versus Green Arow piece with absolutely no Batman on it, I see just how much "completing the story arc" means to you!

Also why I asked him to remarque the comic for me! But even without Bats it is quite a great painting. Hugh does amazing work.
