Description

“Scalped” Issue 10 Page 21
Writer: Jason Aaron
Art By: R.M. Guera

“Scalped” is one of my all-time favorite comic series. Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera’s sixty-issue crime masterpiece is a series that captures the pain of its characters in a way that is brutal, beautiful, and stays with you long after it ends. A gripping crime drama in the vein of “Breaking Bad” and “The Sopranos”, it is described as, “a tale of violence, betrayal, mysticism, despair, hope and the terrible things history leads men to do to one another.” “Scalped” tells the story of Dashiell “Dash” Badhorse. Fifteen years ago, Dash ran away from a life of poverty and hopelessness on the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation. Now, he returns “armed with nothing but a set of nunchucks, a hell-bent-for-leather attitude and one dark secret” But to escape his past he must first embrace his past. Sometimes to get out, you must go through.

“Scalped” is unlike any book I've read. It sticks with you; it gets in your blood, or to borrow a phrase from its creator, it’s like “gravel in your guts.” Good people do bad things, bad people do good things, and while you may not always agree with them or even like them, you do know them. As issue 60—the series finale—ends, everyone has paid. While some’s debts have been paid in blood, others have paid in more personal and painful ways. Regardless of what has happened to them along the way, everyone has changed. This series is Jason Aaron’s writing at its finest. Dash’s final monologue is written and drawn beautifully. And it is beautiful. I realize that is not the word you would expect to describe one of the grittiest and greatest crime series that ever existed. Complicated and engaging you just keep coming back, you can’t escape the Rez. Never is this truer, than it is for Dino Poorbear, Dino grows up on the Rez and he is a good kid trapped by circumstance and bad decisions. If Dino did not have bad luck, he would have no luck. His journey throughout the series is one of the many heartbreaks of the series. This page from issue ten is the moment Dino makes the wrong decision for the right reasons. After Lincoln has given him enough money to get his car fixed and escape the Rez, Dino decides to stay with his family. R.M Guera’s art in this quiet moment of reflection is gorgeous. I am so grateful to add a piece from such an incredible series to my collection.

That panel break at the middle is just incredible.  Without any words, it indicates the scene is there longer and lingers meaning the character's choice was made over time.

It was the quiet moments in Scalped that often spoke the loudest.

Beautiful page!
