Description

Here is a late period Terry featuring the beginning of the end of the Dragon Lady's run. This is the introduction of her last appearance in which she hires the post-war Terry and Hot Shot Charlie to "import" some goods for her and her associate Slits. Here Terry gets a bit too casual and gets a reality check in the form of a slap from the Dragon Lady. This story later goes on to have Slits have other plans, romantic ones with regards to the Dragon Lady. He won't take no for answer and gets quite violent with a few dailies that make up what would essentially be a rape scene. The injured Dragon Lady is saved and put back on the plane by Terry and Hot Shot only for her to parachute out at the first chance she gets. That is the last time we see Caniff draw the Dragon Lady. George Wunder does bring her back for one story early in his run but does not revisit her character again. The Dragon Lady does come back in the disappointing and short lived 80's relaunch of the strip.

There is uncharacteristic glue staining on this page as the word balloon in the third panel has been lost to the ages. I don't recall Caniff making many errors in all the Terry's I have seen so paste-ups, corrections and white out are uncommon. Later in his run on Steve Canyon when assistants were used more often, there would often be corrections. The missing word balloon in the published strip reads "HMM! - SO YOU'RE NOW PAYING US YOUNG FOOLS TO DO YOUR DIRTY WORK, INSTEAD OF HOLDING US WITH BEAUTY ALONE! I GUESS IT'S TRUE... YOU'RE SLIPPING!". Now if that doesn't deserve a slap in 1946, I don't know what does.
