Description

While Hercules officially had "only" twelve labors to perform, he often ran into some pretty formidable obstacles while on the way to do them. One of these involved him traveling to the island of Crete to capture the great bull of King Minos. But while en route there, Herc and his crew had to dock his ship temporarily for repairs. While they worked to fix the ship, Herc decides to wander off and catch a few winks. As he looks for a comfortable spot, a boulder flies over his head, barely missing him. As he looks to see who threw it, forward steps this guy: Antaeus the Giant!

It's never made clear why Antaeus wants to kill Herc. But not having a reason doesn't deter Antaeus, and soon the fight is on! Herc decides to make short work of the giant. After all, he has things to do and places to be. Who needs a slingshot to take down a big guy when you're the Lion of Olympus? Herc hits him and then delivers a flying kick to put him away for good. For a moment, it seems like the fight over. But things aren't always what they seem....

For this particular Herculean chore, I commissioned Gordon Purcell to make it happen. Gordon was a pleasure to work with and seemed to enjoy the assignment. Best part: This fight ain't over! It's just getting started! Stay tuned to see what both Gordon and Antaeus have in store for the Son of Zeus!

Nicely done with the direct camera angle. That 4th panel really shows the difference in scale.
