DescriptionLatest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #138, drawn by long-time contributor Stephen Baskerville, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Invaders #18, original art by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia.Title: "Behind Enemy Lines, Part 1: Captured!" Story: Captain X Of The RAF - a prisoner of the Nazis! Word reaches the All-Star Squadron via the resistance movement in occupied Europe that the valiant flier, who was revealed to be undertaking a secret mission for Britain's Special Operations Executive in #135, has been shot down and captured. Although his radar-invisible plastic plane was destroyed in the crash, he's being interrogated by the Nazis to try and uncover the secret of it's construction - details which would given the Axis a weapon to attack Britain undetected! Two of the heroes working undercover in Europe - Commander Steel and the Americommando - join forces to attempt to free the captured aviator. Breaking into the Gestapo headquarters where Captain X is being held, they're surprised by a group of the special Axis agents who have been working with some of the Nazi villains (as seen most prominently in the "Atom & Evil" story in Young All-Stars). After a furious battle, the extra strength of the Axis agents proves too much even for Commander Steel, who is also taken prisoner, although the Americommando is able to escape and resume his disguise as a high-ranking SS officer, before sending a message back to the All-Stars in the US. At the Perisphere, the heroes are all set to launch their own rescue mission, when word reaches them from the White House - as detailed in Annual #9, President Roosevelt has to personally authorise any mission into Axis territory, and no hero who might be affected by the Spear Of Destiny can be allowed to take part. A small squad of heroes will undertake an attempted rescue, but if it's unsuccessful, then Captain X and Commander Steel will be regarded as casualties of war. Although most of the heroes reluctantly accept this, two of them agree to defy the Presidential edict and will set off on their own rescue mission - next issue! Kane was at his peak in cover designs during the 70's and what them so great was the dramatic content and the stakes being laid out right on the cover. This one has action and peril that promises to be resolved within the story. Using his compositions will always work because it hits just the right tone of appeal to sell a comic.
