Description
Inspired by F M’s recent awesome Immonen post (Happy Birthday, F M!!), I had to copycat and put up one that I have been really excited to share…

There is a unique feeling of endless possibility whenever you read an issue of Nextwave, like the rules don’t quite apply in quite the same ways. The bad guys’ fortress, for instance, might serenely waft along on the breeze, upside down, defended by broccoli people dressed up as superheroes. Ah! That old chestnut!

Here’s a beautifully rendered burst of action, infused with the liberating weirdness that was at the heart of this awesome series. I love the architectural touches in the first two panels, as well as the shadow cast from the floating city down onto the boring, jealous, earthbound buildings below.

Extremely surgical.

Thank you, Randy & Laura!

On top of being extremely fun due to Ellis' writing, Nextwave heralded the artistic transformation of Stuart Immonen (whose art also quite fun in itself).

That the series hasn't been collected in a higher end format (and kept in print) is a true (Hate) crime.

I love Imonen's ability to get in all the lines to be extremely detailed, but leave out a few key ones to make the image also feel simple and uncluttered. That's quite a feat, imo. I wonder if he has in mind which lines he always strikes to get to that style. That last panel is awesome, and 110% Immonen, but also quite a nightmare. Don't let the Dr Monkey with needle fingers anywhere near me, thank you very much! Love this page. Big congrats!

As Fred says, this is the series with which Immonen took a huge step forward in becoming the great illustrator he is today. For some reason though, I've never felt compelled to read it even though I recall hearing very positive things about it when it was being published. Maybe it's the crappy sounding title, which harkens to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, an already guaranteed snoozefest to read. Or perhaps it's fan descriptions such as "The bad guys’ fortress, for instance, might serenely waft along on the breeze, upside down, defended by broccoli people dressed up as superheroes." that have always turned me off from reading it. 😅

Either way, as I've always said, the beauty of comic book illustration is that you can appreciate and enjoy it without ever having read the comic books the pages come from. Congrats on acquiring this one, Jason!

The Hussanator drops another Immonen bomb, this one complete with a floating castle in the sky and perfect perspective/ambience to feel you're a part of the scene.

I always smile when another one of these pages surfaces. Such a great series. I'm surprised it isn't more popular.

My art arrived just the other day
It came to my world in the Immonen way
But there were claims to catch, and bills to pay
Appreciate the art on the NextWave
And she was talking 'fore I knew it, and as Rambeau
She'd say "It's broccoli for you, dad"
"This page is gonna be for you"

And Ellis in the castle and the HR goons
Little boy blue and the needles Baboon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get Grawbadger then
You know we'll have a good time then

Immonen killed on the art on this series.  Awesome page that makes me want to revisit the book.

A brilliant page from a brilliant book that was ahead of its time. Still waiting for that time.

LOVED this book and also loved how effortlessly Stuart toyed with his style in it and nailed the comedy. Congrats, Jason!

Immonen is such an awesome storyteller.  I don't know anything about this series but really like the page and the moment.  Can see why you dig it so much, Jason.  My fave is the panel 1 to 2 transition.  Zoomed in still shot to zoomed out super speed movement!  Congrats, and I shall get my Immonen example soon!
