Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #136, drawn by John Howard, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Black Knight #3, original art by Rich Buckler and Tony DeZuniga.

Title: "The Female Of The Species Is More Deadly Than The Male! "

Story: In #135, the All-Stars learned that Helena Kosmatos had been captured by Wotan, who had mystically separated her from Tisiphone, enslaving the Blood Avenger to use as a weapon to attack the heroes! Woman's magic proves to be too much for Ibis and his Ibistick, knocking the mystic hero out of the fight and leaving Wotan free to grapple with the Grim Ghost, while Tisiphone is unleashed on the other Squadron members present.

In short order, the Blood Avenger defeats Hawkman, Doll Man and Air Wave, but Johnny Quick's speed is able to rescue the fallen heroes. Robotman wades into the fray, the strength of his mechanical body proving a temporary match for his foe from Greek legend - and Hawkgirl is able to free Fury and fly her out of harm's way, although the young heroine remains barely conscious. Liberty Belle focuses her sonic powers on Wotan, distracting him enough for the Grim Ghost to gain the upper hand - but then Wotan retaliates, hurling Belle away, and Johnny Quick is only just able to race to catch his bride before she crashes to the ground. Robotman falls before Tisiphone - and his body is hurled at Johnny and Belle, knocking the speedster out even as Liberty Belle scrambles clear.

As Tisiphone once more scoops up Fury - and Wotan's magic paralyses the Grim Ghost - Liberty Belle realises that the Blood Avenger has not directly attacked either of the Squadron's female members, and takes a daring gamble, challenging Tisiphone to stand with her sisters and break free of the enchantment binding her to Wotan! For a second, nothing happens - and then Tisiphone screams, sets Fury down, and attacks Wotan savagely, forcing the evil wizard to flee!

Tisiphone then collapses, and a reviving Ibis realises that Fury must be reunited with the Greek spirit of both are to survive, and the magic of his Ibistick melds the two together. The battle is won - but Helena Kosmatos is once again subject to the curse of the Blood Avenger...

Another great cover from John - and it was fun using such a little-known cover, particularly because it was trying to work out how I could make this one fit which gave me the idea of separating Fury from her legendary namesake.

Howard gets the feel just right with the danger and Kirby Krackle crunching through!  With Buckler working through that tradition, Howard can more easily understand the original cover to reverse engineer it.

Cheers.

suspicious minds might think that these covers are just an expensive mechanism for me to work through the frustrations of never getting to be a professional comics writer... 😁
