DescriptionBeen looking for more art featuring Native American characters, being half Native American myself, and I loved this one right when I saw it. Though technically Marshal BraveStarr is native to a planet called New Texas, 600 parsecs from Earth :) My 4th Eric Canete piece, and here, he really shows out his unique design chops on these 2 characters from the last animated series and film that Filmation (of He-Man and She-Ra fame) produced – “BraveStarr”.Steampunk-ish vibe here and Canete deftly mixes the western and science fiction genres in the design. Perfect for me, as BraveStarr was the first time I remember seeing and thinking “space western”. Great detailing and colors top to bottom, from the hat to the boots. The tech-y pistols (Neutra-lasers!), the bandolier, the vest, the sash, the earrings…love it all. And you got his partner Thirty/Thirty in the background, holding his trusty blunderbuss, Sara Jane. Ohhh, nostalgic fun stuff. Also cool that he kept his head more equine. Reminds me of how Canete’s TMNT renditions are more snapping turtle-like! Included a couple additional images and if y’all are interested in checking out the intro to the show, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUfJuOp7Dck. I enjoyed a ton of cartoons of the time, as many other ‘80s kids did, but with BraveStarr it was definitely cool to see a clearly Native American designed character. Thanks, Eric and Jason. I keep thinking I’m set on Canete pieces…then…I’m not :) Social/Sharing |

It definitely has a steampunk vibe to it. The art style actually is very European, which I like a lot, very nice! But....this was an animated series back in the 80's??? Because I have never so much as heard of this property, let alone seen it, until this very minute! How is that even possible? Unless, perhaps it was only distributed to a few specific markets rather than all over North America? An interesting mystery! Either way, the art itself is great, and that's no mystery!

Never heard of it?! Blasphemy! :) Well, in your defense it was originally on for literally just 6 months. But you know how Filmation does it - only 6 months, but 65 episodes! Check out a few episodes - doesn't hold up that well, BUT there's definitely some cool design work. And glad you like the piece! Thanks man, and all, for the comments!

This is a badd@$$ take on the character! The current animation revivals are missing the mark because they are trying for the 80's look and feel that we could just watch the old originals to get. We want that next step in animation for our old favorites. We won't even care if they used the same script.

Holy crap! Seeing this art and then going to the YouTube video of the opening credits, it feels like a long forgotten memory has been restored. I think this cartoon came and went in like a blink of an eye when I was around 10 or 11. It's so cool that you got this commission based on a show that meant a lot to you as a kid. Awesome piece!

Ain't that a good feeling to have a fun memory just come back like that?! I've had a few of those instances with this geeky stuff we all dig - always nice to go back to simpler times once in a while, my friend! And yes, super quick series, though you wouldn't think it with the number of episodes produced - see my response to Ruben! Thanks, man!

A perfect subject for Eric and awesome depiction that he accomplished. I can't say any more great things about this piece that you haven't already covered in your write up. I will say that final "Bravestarr" said in the intro still echoes in my head to this very day. True fan or just psychotic?

How about psychotic true fan?! Don't think they have to be mutually exclusive ;) And that intro to the show is tops. I remember how he's coolly leaning on the title lettering when your hear that final "Bravestarr" :) Thanks, John!

Yeah, buddy! BraveStarr and Thirty/Thirty!! Man this brings back memories :) My friends and I used to yell "you're under arrest in the name of the law and the people of New Texas" A LOT. Another sterling piece of work from Canete! Thanks for the share and the fond memories!

Man, I'm a firm believer in maintaining that inner kid!I think us as OA collectors might all believe that to extent :) Glad you like the piece, and that it gave you a nice trip down memory lane! "Champion of justice, Marshal BraveStarr!"

You know I'm going to be singing the theme song all night now. One of the best 80's cartoon intros. Fantastic take on the character.

This actually may be better than the show ;)
(Filmation animated series are not renowed for their quality even though their concepts was obviously exciting enough for young kids ^^).
Canete is truly in a league of his own and I agree that seeing his take on 80s properties is particularly exciting.

Oh man, I love that theme song! I especially love when BraveStarr and Thirty/Thirty wink at each other, and yeah, that final "BraveStarr!". I never saw that series, but it has the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon that I would have LOVED to watch. And that is meant to be the highest praise. Definitely love the style of this piece. The somewhat muted colors give it a south-western vibe. Brave-Starr's costume is an ultra-cool mix of steam punk, 'cowboy' and techy armor. His equestroid side-kick looks awesome too! Thanks for sharing!

Well, technically, on the movie Shaman and BraveStarr arrive at New Texas system in a spaceship (that later becomes the totem lair of Shaman). So he could be from Earth.

Ahh, good call, Ricardo - thanks for the add! I actually haven't seen the movie yet, but I made it a point to check it out after picking this piece up. I'll get there! So, yes, let's go with "Native American" working :)

Chalk this one up to - things I didn't know I needed in my life, but do now. I loved Bravestar as a kid - Canente just did what he does on this and made it amazing.

Superb drawn art and pose (and much stronger than the wacky action figures from that 1980s series :), huge congrats !

It looks like those guys are out of bubblegum. I somehow completely missed Bravestarr. Love that concept. "Space Western" has brought us some pretty sweet things (Star Wars). And Canete really went to town here. The style has a slight Aeon Flux look to me. My favorite thing, though, is the color job. So nice. Congrats!

This is fantastic, K! I had never heard of BraveStarr before this, but after this gorgeous intro to the character (and your obvious enthusiasm, I'll have to look it up. I certainly LOVE the concept!). Stunning execution, too, with the almost manilla-colored paper adding a sepia-type tone that screams "Western!" and allows the white outline around the good Marshall to really pop and resonate. And this wasn't a commission, just a little thing that Eric was working on on the side? Yeah - it was meant to be, K. :) Your Canete Doom piece haunts me still - I love it and think about it all the time - and now with this piece I'm thinking I need to look into getting a piece of his myself. Great pick up, K - congrats!

Thanks for the great comment, as always, Jason. Good callout on the color of the paper and sepia tone screaming "Western!" - definitely the case! And yes - look into Eric's stuff. Love his super unique takes on characters. Glad you like the Doc Doom and Bravestarr like you do! I think they're 2 of his best - no bias ;)
