DescriptionThe Phantom #27, p 15. King Comics, Nov. 1967As someone who grew up on 60z and 70s DC/Marvel superheroes, I find the persevering popularity of the Phantom somewhat of a mystery -- like the character himself, no particular personality and definitely out of place in the modern world, but apparently un-killable (because it's actually a re-fillable role as opposed to a specific person). Does The Phantom endure because of some quirk of the comics business, or because of an intrinsic quality in the material that I'm insensible to? The franchise seems to be particularly popular in Scandinavia? What gives? Regardless, artist Bill Lignante had an interesting career, mostly associated with The Phantom in comics, but more notable perhaps as a high-profile courtroom artist for NBC News. Nothing particularly exciting about the work, but he was definitely a pro, and these pages, (I picked up 3 of them from this story on ebay in 2002), while on the bland side to be sure, are solidly composed and pretty pleasurable to examine. I like the Phantom's pose in the top panel here, and the loose hatching with which he's shaded. The chief's puffy headress is a nice shape in the middle tier (sneakily adding an "action burst" to the punch in panel 2), and the chunky cross-hatching in panel 4 nicely anchors the composition. I have no idea who wrote this story or if Lignante both pencilled and inked (thoughmy guess is both since it's blue-pencilled) -- anyone? Social/Sharing |

Pretty cool action page in that classic rough and tumble adventurer style hero. The Phantom was the prototype for many masked heroes that followed since his origin in the 1930's. If King Features had the longevity of a Marvel or DC, his popularity would still be way up there.
