Description

A personal piece by Finlay, depicting a couple in the woods. There�s what appears to be a ghostly figure of a horse above the woman, though this may be unintentional. Signed �Virgil 36� at lower right and at bottom right, Finlay has written �Dec. 10, 1936�. At this time, Finlay had been working for WEIRD TALES for about a year. The image is 10� x 16� on 11� x 17.5� toned paper.

Although totally different in subject matter from most of his work done for publication, it shows Finlay's devotion to lavish detail in its execution.

This piece was sold through Doug Ellis' Finlay catalog in early November - arriving December 16th. The piece was actually used as the cover to Doug's catalog. The piece came with a Certificate of Authenticity from Brien Virgilia Finlay Hernandez, who inherited it from her mother, Lail Montgomery Finlay Hernandez, daughter of Virgil Finlay.

With just the pencil in hand, Finlay creates a picturesque scene celebrating nature and ovewhelming experience it can be for people who have lost their way in the depression era. This piece is magical and as wonderous as what the couple is seeing for themselves.

A stunning and evocative work by a 20th Century master. This one was on my wantlist from Doug's sale also, but ended up cut due to finances... pretty, pretty dumb on my part! Congrats!

Lovely Finlay example! So much detail but deftly handled so the center of interest stays in focus. Finlay did a great job integrating the figures into the natural background
