Description“Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man” Issue 159 Page 15Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Penciler: Mark Bagley Inker: Andy Lanning This page is from “The Death of Spider-Man” Arc from “Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man.” Death in comics has very little meaning which means for the story to be good the story has to be good. Death does not automatically give the story meaning or relevance. I remember reading the first previews for “Ultimate Spider-Man” in “Wizard Magazine” and loving the updated designs and the idea of having a Peter Parker I would connect with and who would be my age. Mark Bagley and the great Tom Lyle were always my favorite Spider-Man artists so seeing Mark getting to leave such an indelible mark on Spider-Man with this series was also just a great thing to see. Bendis and Bagley did a great job setting the stakes and delivering a story filled with tension, and sadness as Peter engages in one final battle with the Sinister Six led by a completely unhinged Norman Osborn. This page was sold in the winter Comic Art Live. And I was honored to add this to my collection. I remember my thoughts reading this page as a beaten bleeding and dying Peter is helped by his neighbors in Queens. I remember thinking, “Oh no this is not a bait and switch, they are going to kill him.” When Peter saves May, Gwen, and MJ Peter was at peace having saved them when he could not save his Uncle Ben. I won’t lie I was emotional reading issue 160. With the conclusion of this arc we were introduced to a new Spider-Man, Miles Morales, who in my mind may be the most consequential comic book character in the past decade and showed us that anyone could wear the mask as long as they had the responsibility. Tough arc there to finish reading but Pete definitely stood his ground against some TOUGH odds! Congrats on a great example from it!

The Legacy of Ultimate Spider-Man is that it opened up the Spider-verse to tell us great stories that stayed true to the core tennants of the character. The Bagley art was perfect for the quiet Bendis decompressed storytelling when needed and ramp up the full high tension scenes of action for great pages like this. This final battle has Spider-Man with his mask torn off, fighting most importantly as Peter Parker.
