Description

This is the right side of a double-page illo for Fletcher Pratt's "The Wanderer's Return," which ran in the December 1951 issue of the pulp, Thrilling Wonder Stories. I only own this right side, but will also post a copy of the pulp pages which shows the full illo as published. I don't know why Finlay cut this part out from the larger piece at some point, but the left side piece still existed as of about 45 years ago, as it was reproduced in one of Gerry de la Ree's Finlay art books. Needless to say, I'd love to pick up the left part as well and reunite them!

Virgil probably cut up the illustration up as he likely needed the cash and it can be taken as two seperate illustrations, which means more money. I would settle for the left half! I alsways feel terrible knowing that some of my favorite artists never made the money they deserved.

Quite beautiful in itself, the early space age style combined with the illustrative work showing exotic scenes of fantasy and antiquity merge on this piece.
