END OF STORY ARC “LATER THAN YOU THINK,” Conclusion Grant and Sara McKay stand at the center of the Onion, finding not heaven or hell, damnation or redemption, but a truth far grander and stranger than even the Dimensionauts could ever have imagined.

Five years. Sixty months, we’ve had to deal with this. “This”, of course, would be the thirty-eight issues of Black Science from Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera we’ve been forced to gobble up. Alternate realities, family problems, Heaven; these are all things easily touched on by Remender and beautifully illustrated by Scalera with the superb coloring coming from Moreno Dinisio. And, they all expect us to just really enjoy all that wrapped up in a weird sci-fi package. And I do. I really, really, extremely do.

What's in the center of the Onion…?

Grant and Sara made it to the center, running from an anti-gravity blast nullifying billions of dimensions very quickly, last issue. They’re trying to get their kids back and maybe save existence, too. The Core is full of weird mantis-angel-lizard things, and it turns out they are the original decision makers that created all the other existing realities. Heavy. There is even a Grant Prime, and it (he) informs our Grant that everything is being destroyed by his other selves’ actions simply because all Grants were designed to actually destroy everything. Why? We don’t exactly get to know yet, but I think Grant Prime wanted him to.

Heaven is just a video game store

Grant theorized that the Core would be something like Heaven, a few issues back. Sure enough, when the two walk a little ways outside where they entered, it’s a very Heaven-like vista. The path they’re on leads them to a church with the Onion logo the team has been wearing, emblazoned on the front. Inside, they discover more angels wearing headsets. Putting one on, Grant experiences an alternate Grant’s life, from birth to teenage years, in seconds. This causes him to realize that he, himself, was created by Grant Prime, only as a weapon. Black Science can get pretty gloomy. While they are discussing if the love they feel for their children is real or not, the nullification wave destroying reality catches up to them, from the portal they came through.

The ol’ deus ex rescue

While the McKay’s are debating their existence, Grant Prime gets in trouble with Kadir Prime for letting his Grant avatars make it to the Core, and gets killed. Kadir Prime can’t close the portal in time, and the null wave sure appears to suck him and the whole planet in. Grant and Sara embrace, ready to die together, when they get pillared up to a ship. On that ship are Krolar, Nathan and Pia McKay, Ward and Shawn. They all got together a while ago. Thus ends the issue. Wow.

Wonderful art with animation influences.  The wash and inked backdrop is great, but the lines for the faces and heads are what define the characters and the page.
