Description
I first noticed Joe Mad’s work on Deadpool’s first mini-series and I was floored. When he took over Uncanny X-Men it represented a huge departure from the stylings that had come before - Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio specifically had cemented a style for the book that basically spawned an army of imitators in the 90’s and became a house style for Marvel.

Joe brought with him a style that married some of manga’s best qualities (kinetic action that leapt off the page) with terrific rendering and atmospheric realism. At the ripe old age of 19, he was handed the keys to the Uncanny X-men. Ironically, in a very short time his style then spawned its own copycats and became the hot thing-of-the-moment house style at Marvel. Mad had the luxury of having his work finished by a murderer’s row of talented inkers. From Mark Farmer on Deadpool, to Terry Austin and Dan Green in his early issues of Uncanny to Tim Townsend who rounded out the majority of the latter part of his run.

When he briefly returned to Marvel in the 2000’s his work had evolved and he brought that evolution to books like Avenging Spider-Man and Savage Wolverine. Unfortunately those books eschewed inkers and were shot straight to digital color - to varying degrees of effectiveness. Personally, I despised this technique. As a result, the traditional OA from Savage Wolverine exists only in Joe’s pencils which is fine with me. I love the layout of this page and snippets of the best parts of Wolverine it represents. That silhouette of Logan in his Weapon-X getup is a showstopper.

As a bit of self-indulgence, I decided to ink a copy of this page myself to display (see additional images). SUPER stoked to add this page to my collection!

So wicked awesome! For me it was Battle Chasers that taught me Mad's name. But his Ultimates 3 works are what made me want a piece from him someday. Then I discovered his perimeter in board style and was mortified. Someday I'll own a piece but one that uses the whole board. Congrats on your gorgeous slice of Wolvie! Love seeing a talented artists natural pencils alive on the board.

Thanks man! Yeah his move to the smaller boards later on is frustrating as hell. I wish it were different but still just happy to have pencils from this dude in my collection. Maybe one day I'll be able to add some classic 90's Mad in its full sized glory!

Madureira has a way with his characters that is truly Uncanny.  The rawness from Wolverine's character is completely savage.  Great silhouette on top left, you know exactly the feel and era even with just a single image.

Thanks, Dave! All your wishes reflect mine as well! Such a loss to comics that video games exist...

Oh, geez, dude. You killed those inks! I love the page, I've always enjoyed his style, but you really made this page POP with how you laid down those dark inks. The top of the page is especially incredible. Great page, and great work. Congrats all around!

Too kind, J H...but thank you! It was a real thrill to work over a copy of Joe's pencils and a personal highlight as well :)

What?!?  You inked over a COPY of the pencils??!!?  Come on, man - go for it!!  😜

Seriously, though - beauty of a page.  I've always been a fan of tight penciled work (especially Leinil Yu), and this is absolutely splendid.  It has that Ed McGuinness knack of slipping a beautiful splashy image in while never compromising the story flow (Ed McG is the best at that).  Congrats on scoring a Joe Mad - that's awesome, sir!  Great pick up!

Spot-on as always with the Ed McGuinness comparison man. He does those vignette pages effortlessly and maybe Mad took a page out of his book here?

One of the coolest MAD pages I've seen! Fantastic pencil work and love how he laid out the page and smartly divided the panels without traditional borders. And nice work on the inks!

Greta pint about the panel borders on the lower right. They almost come across like shards of mirror showing a couple of close-up vignettes. I think its the lack of borders that helps the page look more like a splash vs a "panel page".

Awesome Joe Mad Wolvie page!  It really captures his feral nature, and you get a bonus shot of Weapon X (which I don't think he ever drew during his Uncanny run).

The drive to get a Joe Mad is strong for anyone that collected comics in the 90's and saw him instantly as one of the most influential artists and amongst the top names of all comics and the top book in Marvel.  This Wolverine piece gives all the nostalgia with that classic sharp line that carve out the iconic Wolverine imagery.

What a terrific & intense page (no pupils, right?)

And yes, Mad loves his (shortcut?) shadows (and smaller board size, and... ;)

Ha yeah! Especially in his latter runs without inkers, there was a little bit of over-reliance on the colorist but I dare say this page has its fair share of pencil lead. I said it before...we need more new Joe Mad work!

Yeah, no inks not ideal but on the other hand it is kinda cool poring over Joe Mad's pencils.  I did like the energy of his work on this series - I got a page myself from it.  This one's truly killer, having the Weapon X image followed by the precursor eyes to pure BERSERKER.  I love it, man.  And so cool you inked a blue line copy!  Congrats!
