DescriptionHappy birthday to Sal Buscema! The greatest Hulk artist (IMHO) is 86 years young and still cranking out great artwork!Defenders issue 17 was a great issue! Aptly titled "Power Play," this Defenders story contained the first appearance of the Wrecking Crew (Wrecker, Bulldozer, Piledriver and Thunderball) and an early guest appearance from Luke Cage, Power Man! Add in the Hulk and Defenders ... you don't get much more power than what was packed into this issue! I am thrilled to have this page land in the week of Sal’s birthday! And with all that is going on in this story, the small role Hulk played was my favorite part of the issue. This was a back issue pickup for me (published well before I started buying new comics) and I picked up Defenders issues hoping to see great Hulk pages inside. This was always a favorite page and clearly the best Hulk page. Just look at the classic Sal Buscema panels - each containing a signature look that Sal would later become well known for in his long, storied run on the Hulk title. The range of emotions from sadness (reminds me of the interplay with Valkyrie and Hulk in Ragnarok) to anger, ending with Hulk wanting to be alone - this theme would become a template Len Wein would use for many Hulk stories to come. And who doesn't love the Hulk's name for fellow teammates or enemies (Magician and Bird-Nose)? I have updated my featured gallery to be all Sal Buscema to honor his birthday - feel free to check it out! Power Play written by Len Wein, edited by Roy Thomas, art by Sal Buscema and Dan Green Setting up Aragorn in a new home at Kyle Richmond's riding academy, Valkyrie is also gifted with a mystical disguise that allows her to switch from street clothes to her warrior armor by drawing her sword, afterwards she bids farewell to the Defenders, as does the Hulk who is upset by Val's departure. When buildings owned by Kyle Richmond are targeted by the Wrecking Crew, Dr. Strange and Nighthawk decide to get involved. Their involvement runs awry when they butt heads with Power Man who is hired by Richmond's aide, Pennyworth, to guard the Richmond buildings. The three sort out their differences, however not before they are confronted by the Wrecking Crew. Social/Sharing |

Defenders 1-50 was an amzing run, in my opinion very much underrated underrated. A big big part of the reason it worked so well was Sal's consistent high quality art. His storytelling was flawless and his anatomy impeccable. And here you have great inks by Dan Green. Another underrated artist, IMHO, being able to work well with Sal and Byrne in the '70s, all the way through JrJr and MSilvestri on UXM in the mid to late '80s. Love this page, huge congrats!

Thanks Carlo, I couldn't agree more. I meant to comment on Dan Green's inks in the description but forgot. For sure, very underated and paired well with Sal on the artistic duties in this issue (and others). Thanks so much!

Such a great page! I always loved Hulk's interactions with the other Defenders. He was almost as likely to beat them up as the bad guys, but it made for an entertaining series!

Green wouldn't be the first inker I think of inking Sal during his long run but he complemented him well on this page.

Wow, you must be so happy to get this. The entire page is incredible, but those first three panels are something else. I just love the transformation from broken hearted Hulk to enraged Hulk. Such powerful emotions conveyed in those facial expressions, wonderfully depicted by Sal. Just an excellent Defenders page!

Thanks Eric! Yes, opening this package definitely had the extra wow factor for me. You can't always predict how hard a piece will hit you when you first see it in person and this was one that packed a punch.

Well, I might be a day late here, but "HAPPY B-DAY, SAL BUSCEMA". Great dedication. And what an increible Hulk page this is. If I were to own just one Hulk page, by our "pal", then it would be this one; hands down. Fantastic score!

From sad to annoyed to angry to destructive to storming off to a classic leap. In six panels. On one page. All Hulk artists take note - everything you need to depict Dr. Banner's alter ego can be found right here.

Thanks Bill, I agree - those panels are the best of 3 really great acts on the page (reading each horizontal pair of panels as an act). They sold me andI would have bought the page with nothing else (but the "else" is so good).

Great Defenders 'family' page. Funny how Sad Hulk always turns into Angry Hulk so quickly! Fabulous action. Dan Green's inks work so well here on Sal.
