Description19 x 24 in. From Tom Jung’s personal collection (via Bonhams).Tom Jung was commissioned to create this piece for the summer 1982 re-release of the film. In doing so, he retained elements from the 1980 poster such as the lens flare and Vader dominating the top of the poster hand- outstretched, but in this re-working was able to add story elements not revealed in the 1980 poster (Yoda! AT-ATs!) In a way, it’s a more complete image for my nostalgia to have Yoda on the poster, even if this poster came out a year after the main theatrical release. While the 1st poster from 1981 appears to have chopped up the main elements of the prelim to accommodate a smaller image footprint (a more prominent Yoda made possible by the complete loss of Han’s body, and no logo!), the 2nd poster from 1982 looks to have retained the prelims tight pencils completely, right down to the hand-drawn logo. Very cool to have this. When I unboxed it, I would stop and spin around and point to it and say, “Oh my God, it’s a Star Wars movie poster!” And I’d look away and do it again and again. Gleeful! Thanks BC for the off-chance note to see if I knew about this auction. Social/Sharing |

Epic pickup and beautiful artwork! I would be as happy as you were if I unboxed this. Big congratulations.

The Tom Jung SW Ep IV: A New Hope painted color poster sold in 2019 for $65k, and I kick myself for missing it...didn't even know it happened until Bonhams was selling more movie poster art in 2021 and I picked through the archives. Doh! This was the most complete and finished piece, as opposed to some unused prelims from 1977. As a display piece this is the best I could get, and more than I could ask for!

I was the underbidder for that piece on that auction.
I just couldn't justify the price. However given recent prices I would buy it again in a heartbeat!
Congratulations on this stellar piece

Beautiful! I remember when they ran poster art in the papers with the theaters and show times and you would see images like these on Fridays.

I'm happy you were able to get excited enough to "Gleefully spin around" :) Maybe, you could list me in your will in case the next "Gleeful Spin" puts you into the coffee table ;)
Be careful with those spins!!!

I could easily be fooled into believing that this is the final piece and inks were added later. It is rare to see such tight pencils on a prelim. Simply a stunning piece!
