DescriptionWelcome back to the final week of Tom Grummett appreciation monthSaved the best for last. This is my favorite of all the Grummett commissions I have. The Creature Commandos and GI Robot. I never read any of the Creature Commandos stories or GI Robot stories. I have no nostalgia for them. The idea of a squad of monsters fighting during WWII was ridiculous and silly and maybe just the coolest thing ever. Lol. Executed perfectly. Just a fun and great commission from Mr. Grummett. The Creature Commandos: Lt. Matthew Shrieve (a normal human), Warren Griffith (a werewolf), Sgt. Vincent Velcro (a vampire), Pvt. Elliot "Lucky" Taylor (a Frankenstein monster) and Dr. Myrna Rhodes (a gorgon), along with JAKE the GI Robot starred in DC Comics Weird War Tales. Weird War Tales by Tom Grummett. Pen and ink on a 17x22 board. Social/Sharing |

Not my own fav' of the bunch but this is deliciously fun and well drawn nonetheless.

Definitely not my favourite of the bunch either, because the idea of a squad of monsters fighting during WWII was ridiculous and silly and maybe just the coolest thing ever. Or...maybe not! 😁
But as you've heard me say many times, it doesn't really matter because Tom has that ability and perfect comic book style that seems to fit ANY character and the finished drawing always looks great!

I couldn't agree more.

I love this because (a) it's Grummett and (b) I actually read many Creature Commandos stories and G.I. Robot adventures while in college and thought they were a lot of fun (I bought a stack of Weird War Tales for twenty cents a book in the late 1990s). An awesome idea for a commission!

Thanks. It's part of my unofficial attempt to get Tom Grummett to draw the entire DC Universe.

Does that mean we'll eventually get the Dingbats of Danger Street and the Green Team?

Lol! I don't think I would go that far. However you did give me another idea. 💡

It's a great mash up of genres as we have horror, war, robots, and their super heroic adventures! When the old war titles were falling out of favor, they adapted to the hot trends of the time. Grummett gives it a superhero shine with clear idea to make it be in the super hero genre.

I must confess I'm not really familiar with these characters. But I love how they all gel together. This is really an explosive piece. Like they are coming out at you. Tom Grummett is just an outstanding artist. Love his work.
