Description"Little Annie Rooney" is one of those strips (there are lots!) that had a highly successful syndication run - 25 years or so - and is totally forgotten today. Like "Abbie an' Slats'" Raeburn van Buren, Darrell McClure had a low-key, naturalistic illustrational approach to comic art, a pleasant style, though lacking the glamor of an Alex Raymond, or the intensity of a Caniff. McClure's strength was more in nautical settings than horses, but his brushwork in this example creates a nice sense of space and light, from the deep black shadows as we look at the house in panel 1, to the more softly shaded, sun-drenched reverse view in panel 3.Social/Sharing |
