Description

From a U.S.S Stevens feature in Savage Tales Magazine.

Sam Glanzman tells a true story about an American Sailor, Lieutenant Miller, who survived his ship being torpedoed and was left alone on an island nearby.

As always, Sam is adept at putting so much story in so little space.

Published in December 1986 in Black and White.

Reprinted in U.S.S. Stevens: The Collected Stories (Dover Graphic Novels) by Sam Glanzman.

I think the art conveys the isolation of the situation just as well as the dialogue. You see the soldier walking into the scene in the first panel, looking down at a symbol of desolation in the big panel, then walking off the page – sort of leaving everything you just saw by itself – in the final inset. It's brilliant.

Strong storytelling and wonderful execution of some grizzled adventure of man vs man vs nature where he must call upon his inner resolve to survive this situation. It is made all the more believable with that Glanzman island jungle setting.
