Description

Odin Burvik, pen name of Mabel Bureick, later Mabel Burwick Waugh after she married Colton Waugh, the cartoonist and writer of seminal comics history book "The Comics." She was born in Colorado in 1904. Waugh had taken over Dickie Dare from Milt Caniff in the 30s, and when he moved on in 1944, his assistant Odin took over. They married soon after. (I think I have read that Waugh continued writing the strip, though I'm not sure)

This strip is dated 7/22 but without a year. According to Wikipedia, Waugh ended his stint on 2/26/44, and it was taken over by Fran Matera on March 8 1948, so this one appeared on July 22 of 1944, 1945, 1946 or 1947!

Odin Burvik was one of the first women cartoonists whose work I acquired. Her fluid strokes and clean black lines really capture the watery surface, and the art almost glows. Burvik died in 1998.
