DescriptionFontaine Fox apparently drew a number of panels for the Woman' Home Companion from the 1910s into the 1920s. This wonderful example appeared in the September 1920 issue of the magazine. The mother from a clearly upper-crust family is upset that her son Atterbury has taken his father's yachting cap and joined a Mud Gutter Band, which was apparently a traveling band that played on the streets of the towns and cities it visited.The drawing is wonderful, done in Fox's expressive, sometimes childlike approach. There were a few Fox cartoons from the Woman' Home Companion that came up for auction in 2013. These apparently came fro the estate of F. Hayden Carruth, who was a writer and editor for the magazine. Great storytelling as the kid has taken a turn for the better to pursue his own passions! A simple joy and a talent revealed all at once.
