DescriptionDavid Wenzel is best known for his stunning painted work on The Hobbit comics adaptation. It is the best comics adaptation of a great novel ever done. But before he did his work in Middle-Earth, David held a variety of jobs in the comics industry. He penciled books like Savage Sword of Conan and Avengers for Marvel Comics. He also worked on a quirky and fun original graphic novel in 1983 for DC Comics with Steve Skeates. It was called "Warlords" and based on an Atari game. The story focuses on a witty troll named Dwayne who lives on a world with four kingdoms, each ruled by one of four brothers. Here, one of the brothers, King Marcus, shapeshifts into a dragon to express his displeasure with a minister of his who was late to court. The graphic novel is charming and well worth seeking out. Great fantasy painted page as it went along with higher end formats being experimented with at the time from both DC and Marvel. A prestige project with painted interiors like this was a big step in comics and this is a prime example with that red dragon in full throat of fire!

It's too bad that those oversized DC graphic novels of the early 1980s never caught on the way DC publishing no doubt hoped they would. This book and Star Raiders by José Luis García-López were just gorgeous and benefited from the larger size. Thank you, as always, for the insightful comment, Marcus.

Moral of the story: Never forget to chip in for beer at a Wizard King party. They do not play! Very nice color work from Wenzel here, as he does. Was a big fan of The Hobbit, too. Very cool piece. Congrats!

Thank you, JH! I now know to pay for my drinks the next time I attend a Wizard King party.
