Description

A new Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - and, surprise! I thought I'd make a brief pivot away from the B&B covers to do a short series of DC Comics Presents covers using the 1940s Superman and a variety of guest-stars from the same era, starting with TNT and Dan The Dyna-Mite. Art by Bambos Georgiou, adapted from the John Buscema/Joe Sinnott cover to Nova #8.

Spring, 1942 - and when Jake (Deathbolt) Simmons reads in the paper that soon-to-be-Ambassador Charles Dunbar and his wife are travelling to Washington to be briefed by the State Department, he thinks that their mansion will be empty, and an easy target for robbery. However, he's reckoned without two things - first, the presence of the Dunbar's son Daniel, and his tutor Thomas N. Thomas, and second, Daily Star newsman Clark Kent, who's returning to the Dunbar's house to collect his coat and hat, which he'd absently-minded left behind when interviewing them for the paper.

When Deathbolt breaks in, he overpowers the Dunbar's staff, but is then confronted by their son and his tutor in their secret identities as TNT and Dan The Dyna-Mite - and although his electric blasts knock TNT out, the arriving Clark Kent swiftly changes into his secret identity, and Superman enters the battle!

Temporarily held at bay when Deathbolt takes Dan The Dyna-Mite captive, Superman is blasted by the villain - but the young sidekick uses his own powers to break free and, with TNT revived, the three heroes are able to defeat Deathbolt! While Superman takes him into custody, TNT tells Dan The Dyna-Mite that he can't avoid his homework any longer - if he doesn't knuckle down and study, then he might end up like the hapless Daily Star reporter who has *still* not come to pick up his hat and coat!

Superman teams up with another Golden Age guest-star - next issue!

I like that Georgiou went with the smaller blast to allow the Superman symbol show through.  It has every bit of high drama as the Nova by shrinking the logo area for a less crowded feel.

I asked Bambos to make sure Deathbolt's blast was adjusted so Superman's symbol was visible - if you look at the initial layout you can see that this was a later change.
