DescriptionNormally, I reserve these galleries for Trophy Wall pieces I personally commission, but when I saw this piece come up for auction recently I recognized it as a piece that would fit into my overall collection but also a piece of cartoon history and created by one of the most prolific magazine cartoonists of the 20th century.Charles Elmer Martin created cartoons for The New Yorker for over 50 years, beginning in 1934. His topic ran the gamut of topics but always with a gentle style and a real thoughtfulness behind them. This piece is no exception. From the Holiday Issue of The New Yorker, December 20, 1958 comes "I thought I heard a twig snap" which is a disconcerting feeling for anyone that's stacked that many heads on their wall. An almost "tell tale heart" type of lump in the throat I'd imagine. In any case this is a very large piece that was professionally framed and matted with the caption gaining special matting, as it is said this piece actually hung in The New Yorker's offices for a time. I can see why. It's well executed and appealing. This piece ran originally in that December 20, 1958 issue as an almost full page image (shown in additional images) and was again featured in "The New Yorker's 75th Anniversary Cartoon Collection. A great piece that I am glad I discovered available at auction and that I've given a good home. Social/Sharing |

Hilarious cartoon by Charles Martin! I love New Yorker cartoons and have several collections of them. The artists manage to squeeze an incredible amount of storytelling in a single panel! Outstanding pickup!
