Description
Here's a wonderful head study done from life by Erik Gist, a great friend who is also a fantastic artist. I just love the feel of this painting --- the color, expression, and abstract shapes all conspire to put me in a good mood whenever it comes into view.

Thanks for taking a look!

Totally agree with you. It's abstract in an interesting way, but also has the details needed to fill in necessary information. Great piece! Congrats!

Really nice! I like how the negative space defines the shirt with the energetic brushstrokes sweeping down from above. The face is so well rendered; I especially like how the eyes were painted. Great frame!

The brightness of the reds, yellow, and green, on the headband and bandana are used very sparingly, but highlight the wonderful facial work very effectively.

It's realistic while still also being very painterly, which I really enjoy. I like how he used the browns to define the shoulders and then allow all of the negative space beneath that to form his shirt. I can see why it puts you in a good mood whenever you look at it!

This is a painter having fun with paint, which makes it fun for us, and showing off skills.
