Description
I'm a big fan of Geof Darrow and his Shaolin Cowboy series, so when I saw this piece in Jim Rugg's portfolio at Heroes I knew it was coming home with me.

This is an unpublished piece and Jim said that this was his first attempt at drawing Shaolin Cowboy.

When I was in high school, there was a guy in our community and when he saw me out in public, would always say, “Tyler, my boy, looking fine as always!” When Jim showed me this piece and said it was his first attempt, that saying came directly to mind, “Jim, my boy, looking fine as always!” Although I wasn't about to say that out loud :)

Jim did a great job with the hand lettering on this piece, as he does with so much of his work. I also love the pose that he decided to use, so unique.

Always happy to add a Jim Rugg original to the collection.

His first attempt at drawing Shaolin Cowboy, and it looks like this? I'd say he nailed it in one. Congrats on this pick up my friend!

A fun piece, Tyler! Though I can't help but hink that you need to be careful that your anecdotes might even be outshining the art itself! 😜

Haha! At some point one of them is bound to have the opposite effect, leaving fellow CAFers in pain as they scurry to hit the back button. On a side note, I recently saw that guy at the grocery store for the first time in over a decade, and he hit me with it like it was yesterday.

I have to admit that I didn't really start paying attention to Rugg's work until I started watching the Cartoonist Kayfabe videos, which is my bad since he's incredibly talented.  Congrats on the great pickup!

Thanks Michael, he truly is. Works in many different styles as well.

Jim Rugg seems to have the ability to absorb the technique of artist's he admires while maintaining his own hand. This piece looks as Darrow as it does Rugg. Nice pickup. Bonus for the lettering/original logo on the board.

Just like Grand Design, Rugg studies and boils down the essence of Darrow's art which show Shaolin Cowboy in a wild action pose with those distinctive details.

Thanks Eranga! It's not too late! You know I am just as envious of your posts if that counts for anything.
