Description

Avengers #213 p19 Hall pencils Yellowjacket and Wasp

From the infamous storyline of the trial of Yellowjacket. We all know the story, but I think this page adds context. It's the page before the slap which forever branded Hank Pym as a wife abuser. Jan surprises Hank, who has sequestered himself in his lab while awaiting court martial by the Avengers, secretly creating a robot monstrosity only he could defeat as a way to salvage his reputation. Jan shows nothing but concern, but is nearly squashed by an outraged Hank. Jim Shooter has indicated that the backhanded slap on the next page was meant to appear "accidental" but was illustrated too strongly. I think this preceding page contradicts that. There is nothing accidental about his closed-fist violent motion towards the Wasp, making the backhanded slap on the next page seem all the more intentional. If this blow had connected it would have certainly done serious harm to Jan, more so than the black eye she suffered from the actual slap.

I didn't know Shooter said that slap was supposed to be accidental. I agree, this page completely contradicts that. (And don't all abusers say, at least the first time, that it was an "accident" or they didn't really mean it?) Thanks for sharing the page and that description.

When this came out I hated what he was doing with Hank. It was so troubling and a story like this needed to be said but why with one of my favorite characters?

Totally hated it too! Brutal. It struck a nerve though, and forever altered our perception of Hank. I think it did set up Janet to become a much stronger character and a leader.

100% agree- in an odd way it did help her become much stronger and turn into a more interesting character.  She could not catch a break between Hank and Ultron.

One of my favorite Avenger storylines. Hank was such an ass during this time. But what a great commentary it was. Especially, for that time period. Great score!
