I spent a good deal of time reading war comics before I started reading superhero comics, and you never saw Sgt. Rock and Millie Marie beating up the crew of the Haunted Tank when they crossed paths.

In recent years I’ve commissioned artists to do peaceable meetings of characters. I’ve had a semi-running thing of having characters to be eating or drinking together; this may have been subconsciously inspired in part by a What The.? issue where Aquaman and Sub-Mariner sitting around drinking tea while a battle raged around them.
