DescriptionLouis Rhead (1857-1926) was an English-born American illustrator well-known for his poster illustrations, which often appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Harper's Magazine, St. Nicolas, Century Magazine, Ladies Home Journal and Scribner's Magazine. When the popularity of poster art declined, Rhead turned to book illustration, illustrating such classics as Robin Hood, The Swiss Family Robinson, Robinson Crusoe, The Deerslayer, Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Arabian Nights' Entertainment. This incredible pen and ink illustration is from The Arabian Nights' Entertainment, published in 1916 by Harper & Brothers, and accompanied "The History of Ali Baba, and of the Forty Robbers Who Were Killed by One Slave". In the book the illustration is captioned, "The Captain of the Robbers Pronounced These Words, "Open Sesame!" When you talk about classic illustration, it doesn’t get much more classic than this, especially for fans of incredible ink-slinging. I’ve tried to give you a good-size scan here, but no scan will ever do Rhead’s ink work justice. The hatching, cross-hatching and contour line work are simply amazing. Just look at those incredible textures. Measuring 19½”x 13½”, the illustration is lightly and evenly toned. As you can see from the printed image, someone trimmed away about 1/16th of an inch along the lower edge, likely to fit the piece into a frame. I wish they hadn’t done that, but there’s nothing to be done about it now. Luckily, only a tiny bit was lost. If you collect stellar examples of illustration from important books, this one is for you. $1000.00 + 20.00 Priority shipping. Social/Sharing |
