Description

The figure of Dagwood's mother in the second panel was repeated, almost exactly the same, a few days later, in the January 29, 1933 Blondie Sunday page (shown in my Chic Young gallery). Everyone can compare the two images and decide for himself/herself whether the same artist drew both, whether the second use of the image was copied from the first, and other such issues regarding the degree of Alex Raymond's participation in the Blondie dailies and Sunday pages from this period.

Collecting Blondies, cont.

New opportunities to buy important Blondie originals came about beginning in 2016. Chic Young's son, Dean, who had been sitting on a large number of Blondie originals, consigned many of them to an auction company in Southern California. Many had been used in producing various books on Blondie strips from 1947 onward, especially those which included a few pages of strips from the 1930s. I possessed all of those books, some from the time they were first printed, and many of my favorites that had been in those books were offered at auction. Aside from several of the most beautiful dailies ghosted by Alex Raymond, there were several originals featuring Baby Dumpling as a toddler, which largely had not around before the the recent auctions started. There were even two hunger strike dailies, but I didn't bid on them since I found it exceedingly unlikely that I would ever be able to acquire all the ones I still needed from the series. They also appeared to have significantly discolored paper, although I now know that the photographs on the auction website made at least some of the offerings look much darker than they are in reality. There have been about four auctions to date of the Dean Young hoard, and I have been very happy that I was able to acquire many originals that I had coveted for decades.

It now appears that almost all Blondie originals from the 1930-1935 period do still exist, so who knows which treasures will be available for interested collectors in the future.
