I love Van Sciver's work. He was the 2nd coming of Brian Bolland for a while until his mainstream comics career was derailed. This is a really nicely drawn piece, but I have to admit I don't "get it". Why is there a Captain Marvel head floating by while Captain Marvel still has his attached in the background?

From what I understand, they would not publish the floating head so he had to keep the head on the body for the published piece. Maybe he was intending to remove the head from the body with computer retouching or even whiting it out?

No, that can't be it because this wasn't commissioned by Marvel, it was commissioned by a comic art collector, so it was never intended to be published, hence why it's so confusing.

Hello Ruben!,

So I checked with Ethan personally on this piece. He said this was in fact a privately commissioned piece but the collector felt the floating head was a little to graphic. Ethan drew the head back on the body and covered the floating head with the title banner.

Have a great evening

Good evening, Marty! I'm glad to know exactly what happened. My confusion stemmed from the fact that there was one body but two heads. Now I realize the body originally didn't have a head on it. That IS very gruesome, indeed, I like Van Sciver's initiative in going for something well out of the ordinary. I only wish he would have added the head on the body via a cut out paste over, so that way we could still see the headless body as intended. Thanks for letting me know!
