Description

Prout painted a few similar versions of this view of the Roman Forum, including a well-known watercolor now in the art gallery in Bristol, England. This example is in better condition than the one in Bristol.

The ruins bring out a feeling of lament that these corinthian columns were part of a thriving culture and civiliation that was more ornate than those that used the doric or ionic syle. It reminds us that even though we feel that there is a secure and sound nation, there are forces at work that want to make it fall.

Personal painter to both King George IV and Queen Victoria. Prout was no slouch. Can't wait for you to post a better picture. I am sure that in person the textures from the water colors really pop. Thanks for sharing. Really nice piece of art.
