Description

Ever since I picked up a copy of Sentinel in the late 70s, I've been a huge fan of Syd Mead, the amazing futurist who designed cars, boats, buildings, gadgets, and environments starting in the late 50s up until and after he started doing concept work for films such as Star Trek, Tron, Blade Runner, Aliens, 2010, etc. I was so tuned into this guy that I had already bought the Blade Runner Souvenir magazine before the movie was even released in theaters, and that film really delivered. It remains (tied with Alien) my favorite movie of all time.

I love prelims and comprehensive sketches by most artists I admire, but with Mead, it's especially exciting since he was primarily a designer, and cars were his first and most important subject. Of course, I'd love to acquire one of his gorgeous finished gouache paintings, but I am delighted to have this pair of drawings in my collection.

These two drawings were done in preparation for a 1985 painting of a Sport Sedan. I just discovered that these drawings were published in Studio Image 1, along with the finished painting (see attached images), where the credits say it was done for Rays Co., Ltd. I've also attached images of a full color prelim and the finished gouache painting, taken from the book Kronoteko. These are labeled as Sport Sedan (Rays Wheel) in that book. This may have been made into a Hot Wheels toy car design, but I'm not sure. Any info is appreciated!

Thanks for taking a look!

Fantastic design, he truly got a vision!

It's really nice that he doesn't erase the excess lines that go over.  It is if he wants us to know what shapes he used and how each curve and contour is there.  As a designer, it is for the purpose of showing the person he hands it off to that has to build the 3D model.  These exude the feeling of speed with their sharp wedge and low center of gravity.

Well, if you're going to acquire an original Syd Mead painting, how can you NOT get one of his car designs, right? Very cool, as his art always is. Great to see the simple yet beautiful lines here!

Wow! I love looking at his preliminary work, I feel like you can really see the skill in his draftsmanship better than the perfect finished pieces. Congratulations on a couple huge pick ups!

WOW, aa - you have -SO- many genuinely COOL pieces in your gallery... and these may very well be the coolest...?  There is something so -thrilling- about Mead's engineering designs, even more than his otherworldly and absolutely/equally brilliant fiction work.  This work was not intended for escapism or fantasy (no knock intended of course; I love that stuff, too :) ); this was full of high intention and purposeful direction.  This was meant to shape our real world and as such, there's weight or energy to it that I find genuinely thrilling.  Perhaps it's because I discovered the work of both visionaries at around the same time, but his line always reminded me a bit of Joe Johnston's (and vice versa)...?  Absolutely superb add, aa.  Huge congrats and thank you for sharing this with us here!

Thanks for the comment, Jason!  I totally agree that Mead was really creating our real future more than "just" entertaining us, and I'm amazed at how well he predicted so many aspects of modern life and design, from the large screen TVs (and so many other things) in Blade Runner to all those yacht designs from the 70s and onward that look exactly like the sleekest modern private ships, to name a couple examples.  I love Joe Johston's concept work and in fact, I bid on a cool Empire SB piece in a recent auction, but I wasn't the most aggressive bidder...
