This preliminary by Virgil Finlay is, I think, from "The Iron Star" by John Taine. Finlay illustrated that novel for the September 1943 issue of Famous Fantastic Mysteries.

I love this! Kind of reminds me of the Bigfoot from the Six Million Dollar Man 2-parter.

So great! Finlay doing what he does best in a finished work! It demonstrates the stipple style and the delicate brushwork!
