DescriptionPublished 1971Mourn for the Thorn! written by Robert Kanigher Thorn has been apparently killed by the 100 and a funeral is held for her. Rose & Thorn debuted as a back up feature in Lois Lane 105 with gorgeous art by Ross Andru. I picked up the Lois Lane issues just to read Rose & Thorn. This was the second iteration of the character which had similarities to its golden age predecessor. Social/Sharing |

I love scenes like this. Lovely Andru art, too. It reminds me of a Three's Company episode where Jack and the gang fake his death at a funeral home in order to foo la mobster who thought Jack had fooled around with the mobster's wife. Good times! Oh, and if I hadn't read the page, I would never have realized that was Lois in the final panel!

I love the Rose and the Thorn stories that appeared in Lois Lane and this is a great example of them. One of the things that appealed to me was the ambiguity of her character, as Superman himself alludes to.

She just lies silently still
In the dead of the night
Although it's wrote by Bob Kanigher
She sleeps silently inside
Was it something I said or something I'm dead
Did the inks not come out Mike
Though I tried not to hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that's why this page
Every Ross has its Thorn
Just like every night has to mourn
Just like every Hundred sings his sad, sad song
Every Rose has its Thorn
Yeah it does

That was such an odd, interesting series -- I remember finding issues of LL lying around, and skipping the main story to get to the backup. This exact page, with the gangster tossing the number into the coffin, is burned into my brain....
