Nestor Redondo - Tagalog Klasiks # 22 Cover - 1950 (unpublished)

This rare piece is Nestor's unpublished version of Tagalog Klasik's #22 (1950). Works like these are always an interesting look into an artist's process, especially when things aren't going as he likes. Although the basic composition remains true in the final version, Redondo made major modifications. Among other details, his rather static cringing man's pose is replaced by a more natural fluid one. The net effect is a much stronger piece. Additionally, it's noteworthy what the reverse of this piece looks like. Paper was at a premium in the Philippines following world war II and here is an example of making the most of the situation. Possibly it was rescued from the trash bin of a school chemistry department or reused after the drawing was discarded for homework. Whatever the case, the page is covered in chemistry formulas punctuated with a basic english phrase.
