How have I not seen this before? Every panel is a gem. Redondo's brush skills at the top of his game.
Wood was so judicious in his use of Craftint that it's very unusual to see him use a full board. He does so to great effect here. One of his best Sci-Fi EC splash pages, which is to say, simply, one of his best! Congrats Tom!
Alas, I bought that set new off the shelves and this piece, while very much in the same style, was not used as a cover. The quest continues....
I absolutely appreciate the symbolism here, Damon! This is art in its finest form, where it shines a light (as if it weren't already obvious) on the current state of our country.
Agreed, there is STILL an unsettling amount of biogtry in this country, grown all the more emboldened by an equally fascist administration.
Let art keep fighting the good fight!! We know which side history will be on!
Likewise for me Alan. I bought this off the rack as well. The story has stuck with me ever since, in particular this page. It really brought home the cost of war on both sides. Powerful stuff.
It may not be original art, but I really enjoy seeing one offs like this. I had no idea Raymond traveled in such exotic circles!
One of Fabian's best color pieces. The composition is spot on and the layering of dark to light to dark creates a brilliant depth of field that draws you into its space. There the tension of the brilliant red cloak contrasted to all the cold just holds you...until that tiny light in the castle catches your eye. Really wonderful piece.
The Liberty Magazine spot illustrations I've seen are done on a 7"x9" image area.
I'm unfamiliar with Manukyan's work , but that stare is stunning. Whether it's a matter of the proportions of her face or the intimacy of the image, or both, it creates a very insistent connection between viewer and viewed. Absolutely beautiful and stunning. Congrats. I hope it hangs somewhere special.
A perfect example of Mark's incredible skill at creating textures with a drybrush.
Fantastic example that contains all the elements that made this such a brilliant strip! Worth the wait!
His invoices are as delightful as his illustrations! He must have been a very generous man.
Quite possibly the best comic art related anecdote I have read! Alcala was an astonishing artist.
Exquisite piece, but surely it's upside down.
I never expected to see Kollwitz on this site. Her work is visceral, powerful and eternal.
Absolutely mesmerizing piece! The textures are sublime. Thanks for once again introducing me to another fine artist.
Now that's just flat out awesome, from te color choices to the detailing of the raygun. Fun piece!
Matania never skimped on the details of his illustrations. Be it gesture, expression, texture, contrast or design. Every element reveals something about the period depicted and solidifies the overall composition. To think such brilliance was exhibited with piece after piece, week after week for many decades is astonishing. A true master of illustration!
Striking composition. Godwin put so much intricate brush and linework into his ink llustrations that his paintings feel almost abstract in comparision. He was a master of many mediums and presented very different styles in each.
I appreciate the extra effort Redondo often put into rendering shadows and reflected light on his title pages. It always gave them a heightened sense of drama.
Purient hack job. Whoever would do such a thing to this and other artwork should be called out. They show no respect for the artist and reveal more about themselves than the figures they've uncovered.
That's a wonderful illustration. I hope it's got a place of prominence on your wall now!
Interesting thought Jeff. I don't know anything about the early use or composition of markers, but I can see these large black areas being done by something like a filbert brush dipped right in the bottle. The heavy blacks aren't faded at all like I might suspect could be the case with an old marker.
I've always thought it was pointless to recreate a Frazetta. They'll forever be pale imitations. A reinterpretation showcaseing a similar color palette and level of skill, now that's interesting! Wonderful piece!
Interesting to hear that it was also used on this side of the Atlantic. Do you have a pic of the cover? I'll love to add it here.
While it might not be the focus of the page, I particularly appreciate the composition and delicate execution of the first panel. It conveys a wonderful sense of airiness.
Carlos was such an amazing artist! So sorry to have lost him. He's inspired me for years and the man's ability to draw the human body in ANY pose is unsurpassed! You will be missed, Carlos.
Mark NEVER fails to impress but this one is perfectly balanced in every way! Wow! Congrats!
I've never had much luck putting stories back together or building sequences. I'm fortunate others have done better than me! Thanks Thomas!
American Imperialism rendered to perfection. McCay's details, artistic and political, are brilliant....as always.
Wonderful example of what Salinas could do with expression. I thoroughly agree his skills were at least on par with the other masters like Foster, Raymond and Frazetta. Congratulations!
Lovley commission Dennis! Rags' use of the infinity composition is perfection!
Wow! Dan Smith (not Dan Wright?) does an octopus and early diving suit! Gorgeous find Thomas!
I absolutely agree John! The lively, yet controlled movement of his brushwork is close to Frazetta's and his eye for historical details on par with Foster. Imagine if he'd had the same opportunity to work on the scale either of those American artists had to showcase his skills....
Words fail. If I'd let this one slip away, I think I'd be a broken man now. Bob is a lucky guy. What a beautiful exhibition of Booth's skills.
Thanks for the catch, Steve! It's been corrected.
Such an elegant and carefully delineated piece for RGK. Wonderful!!
Prime period for Woody in my book. It's cliche to say, but he's at his peak here, exhibiting a heavy Eisner influence in the brush work (no doubt carried over from his exceptional run on the Outer Space Spirit).
One of the most striking pieces I've seen on the CAF in years. Expertly composed with exquisite colors. Absolutely captivating! Congrats on adding such a beauty to your collection. I hope it resides in some prominent wall space. Certainly it is deserving!
Great example of Smith's exquisite drybrush work. Congrats on landing all of these wonderful strips and thanks for posting them, Thomas! They're a feast for the eyes!
I'm unsure of which year but likely drawn in 1979 or 1980. Definitely not 2019!!
