DescriptionJonah Hex by Val Semeiks. All I asked for was Jonah Hex, plain and simple. No directions, no specifics. Val's thought process... "I like characters like Hex and Conan because they don’t have a set uniform and have gear. So I’ve included that kind of thinking in the sketch. I’ve got Hex with a pistol and a rifle. An Indian looking knife and his cavalry saber. He’s in a Confederate shirt and hat, but I’ve added a vest. And his pants are outside his boots." "I’m familiar with Garcia-Lopez’ work, as well DeZuniga and the other guys after. But I’m most impressed by Jean “Moebius” Giraud’s BLUEBERRY work. I’m trying to get some Clint Eastwood into the drawing too." "Since Hex has Confederate clothes and gear, the drawing is of him shortly after the war. I like to be gun appropriate, so he has a Colt Army revolver and Spencer rifle. They both shoot cartridges, so showing those on his belt is appropriate. The rifle could be a Winchester Model 1866 – that looks more like a standard Western lever action gun. But I think the Spencer rifle is more interesting. He also has his sword and an Indian knife." "It’s pretty much a Clint Eastwood style pose. I want to try and keep it a little spooky." Wow! That's an insane amount of thought and detail for a simple commission. My Thanks to Mr. Semeiks for such a gorgeous Jonah Hex. A Moebius inspired Jonah Hex by Val Semeiks. Pen and ink on 11x17 board. Social/Sharing |

Yeah, I can see he chose to emulate Moebius' style to some degree, but without overtly copying it. It looks great. I love that Semeiks puts so much thought into his commissions, because unlike many others who only do it because they have no other way of earning an income, it shows that he actually cares about doing the commissions. It's nice to read about experiences that are as positive as your experiences with Val!

It's your CAF 19th anniversay that is immortalized on tonight's CAF Update video! I see a lot of Dave Gibbons in the inking as well. Maybe he was influenced by Moebius as well!
