Description
I just received this piece today and couldn't help but post it. I recently saw this for sale on CAF and sent in a purchase request as the 6th viewer of the piece. The imagery just floored me as it was all I was looking for in a Silver Surfer Black Commission. I love the distorted fisheye angle, which was one of the biggest draws for me. I also love the black arm extending back toward Galactus. I truly thank the seller for parting with this one as I might have chased a bunch of Silver Surfer commissions in my life never getting what I truly wanted, which is this or something just like it. As you can tell I am a fan of the heavy inks and distorted angle. I am also thankful for the fact of how easy of the transaction was with lighting fast shipping.

One thing you might not know about me is the fact that I used to be a snowboarder. I was quite good in my mid 20's and was offered a very low-level sponsorship. A week before my photoshoot, I ended up snapping my leg in half with a tib/fib compound fracture. I was attempting a misty 540 over a massive jump about two stories high and approximately 60-80ft long. Sadly, I hit the knuckle even without a single speed check from lift to ramp. It ended any hopes for a career in the field, but I still have fond memories of powder riding, flipping off cliffs, and just finding inner piece on the mountain. Those memories really connect me to the silver surfer, and I always wanted a great image of him surfing through the stars.

In the not-so-distant past I came across another commission that moved me, which you can find in my commission favorites entitled Silver Surfer Pin Up by Grindberg. Up until that time, it was my favorite commission I had ever seen of Silver Surfer. It may still be my favorite piece, but if ever there were a piece to compete with it this would be the one for me. They are both basically at the level of visual nirvana and I am so happy to have at least added this piece to my collection. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

Attached is an additional image of one of the only photos of me riding back in the day on a friend's disposable film camera.

I bought some art today
The Silver Surfer feel
The wallet feels the pain
I took Galactus' deal

Ski boarding fears you told
Tyrell's familiar inks
Gonna paint it black for Saint
But I will herald anything

What have I become?
Galactus' friend
Every piece I own goes to pay
Planet's end

And Cannon draws to cause
My desire to surf
Never let you down
This commission works

I can almost envision the feeling of surfing on the stars as powder gives you a feeling of slight weightlessness. You stop you sink, but get the right speed you just float on top of it.

Very cool commission, still bummed out I didn't start collecting until AFTER SSB.  Also, cool that you were into snowboarding!  I wish I had grown up somewhere where I could have done stuff like that.  I might have caught a foot or two of air on my bike when I was a kid, lol.

Don't feel bad. I didn't start collecting till after it either. It is difficult finding good artwork, but it is still out there to be had for the right price. I always wished I were abe to grab a Tradd piece, but I think that went out the door lol.

Sadly a super power I lost with three surgeries over 5 years and 1.5 years of physical therapy. I did the trick again just to say I could do it after the injury, but decided it might not be smart to keep trying my luck lol. Let me tell you though there is few feelings in the world like flipping off a cliff at the top of a mountain. You feel like you are jumping off a thousand foot cliff. All you see as you take the leap of faith is the basin well below you. You don't spot your landing until you are upside down looking at what feels like a two to three story building landing below you. Ya, I had a true passion for it in my youth. Sadly due to family dynamics, I haven't been up in years. However, you can still find me skateboarding on a weekly basis with my kids.

Man I love this!  Fish eye kind of distorted view is perfect for a super speed soaring Silver Surfer!  You can see some Tradd influence but still ALL Cannon.  I aloo like that you can't immediately make out Galactus in the back - cool trick!  Congrats!

And thanks for sharing your snowboarding story!  Glad to know you've been able to connect OA with that part of your life :)

I also connect a bit through skateboarding as well. I was never quite as gifted with it, but I still skate with my girls on a semi frequent basis.

As a character, the Surfer is packed with symbolic meaning so it does seem like an inexhaustible topic.

Dang, you snapped your leg in half?!?!  Ian!!  I'm glad you still have fond memories of snowboarding in the mountains.  Talk about a sport with some beautiful & majestic scenery, right?   Anyway, I love this piece!  It's just so unique, with all those attributes you describe.  I can see why you are totally thrilled.  Congrats!!

I contemplated posting an additional image of the x-ray, but then thought ya that might be a bit too much lol. The scenery in the mountains is amazing and the sound of silence as it snowed was exquisite. Especially seeing how my three hooligans are nonstop screaming in my house lol. Thanks for the kind words.

I rarely check on a daily basis anymore as just too much other things goingnon at home. I try to comment about once a week and then maybe for a couple of days if available. Ya I was really thrilled with this one.

He really hit the distorted proportions on the nose and it really works for this imagery. Really is one of my favorites in my collection now.
