DescriptionRomita Jr's evolution as an artist has been truly remarkable. I loved his early "Marvel style" efforts with Layton, but the period I personally like the best is Daredevil with Nocenti and the second Iron Man run. The Daredevil run is particularly memorable. It must not have been easy for the Nocenti / JrJr creative team to follow in the footsteps of Miller and Mazzucchelli. Yet they found their own voice, with stories that were different and yet true to the essence of the character. "A true merry Christian would have turned the other cheek". How cerebral is that when said to Daredevil? This splash features a huge image of villain and hero. Romita decided to go for his own version of Mephisto, giving him an alien-like look that highlighted his deviousness and cruelty. I am not a fan of inks that show paintbrushes. Yet here one has to admire Williamson's study of lihgt and the use of inks to show hellfire reflections on DD's head and shoulders. Social/Sharing |

When I think "JRJR" I think "DD" first, and that's due to this run and the Man Without Fear mini. Just at the top of his storytelling AND illustration game, and Al Williamson I know had a lot to do with that. Stellar example here, Carlo. Congrats!

The evolution of JRJR's artistry happens here and with a legend like Al Williamson, the stage was set for the dramatic and they delivered in this splash. It was Marvel storytelling breaking away from the house style his father had codified and inspired more artistic voices in the coming decade.

That was a great run indeed. JrJr's transformation of Mephisto was spectacular.
