Description

Worlds Will Live. Worlds Will Die. And My Original Art Collection Will Never Be The Same.

There is a part of me that believes the line above sums up everything there is to say about this page and really says it all.

But having said that, there is probably some expectation that I write-up something more and say more for such an occasion. I will now take that opportunity.

As is my traditional ritual upon acquiring a new page of art, I will post a sneak-preview on the social media. Many of those friends, family, former co-workers, fellow comic readers, podcasters and now fellow original art collectors on social media have mirrored many of my own internal thoughts about this page.

The "Wow" emoticon and/or exclamation is frequently used. One of the penultimate pages from the original Crisis On Infinite Earths? Without argument one of the greatest crossover event books that's ever been or will ever be? Penciled by George Perez ?!?! At the peak of his powers?!?!!? One of the artists most identified with said epic super-hero events and universe sprawling sagas? A page that literally screams the concept of the (now oh so mainstream) multiverse of Crisis On Infinite Earths with multiple versions of the same iconic character known worldwide? Featuring the Earth-2 Superman (Kal-L), Superboy Prime AND the 'Big Bad' of the book, the Anti-Monitor?

"Holy $#%@" dude!

One of my dearest and closest friends of the last 23 years made a deceptively simple statement, yet managed to capture the very heart of the matter.

"I know how much you love the original Crisis"

I have my own reasons for going after this particular page, many of which are universal and reflected in the above text. There are certainly others that are more true to myself. I am a DC Guy. I am a Superman guy. I am a Crisis on Infinite Earths guy. You can't spend nearly fifteen years discussing the History of DC Comics without bringing up the concepts of Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis. I love that the page has 'SURPRINTS' written in big letters on the right-hand side of the page. I love that this is the last time Superboy-Prime would still have his immunity to a red sun. I love that when it comes to multiversal genocide, that Superman can live with killing the
Anti-Monitor. I love that the Anti-Monitor survives the first of multiple 'deaths' like the end of a horror movie following the rules of 'Scream."

"This is the moment when the supposedly dead killer comes back to life, for one
last scare."

I don't know if this was ever a goal of mine as an original art collector, but I know I have now achieved the goal I'm about to disclose. I finally have a page of original art in my collection that is bigger than myself. I truly do subscribe to the Mandel school of thought that everyone should find those pages that no one else loves but them. But this is not that type of page. This is a page that I certainly love, but it transcends my love and is loved universally. By those friends, family, and former co-workers whether they read comics or follow original art or not. And especially by those fellow comic readers, podcasters and now fellow original art collectors.

I must take a moment to thank my Dad, for his support in obtaining this piece of original art. (And really for his lifelong support every single day.) My Dad read and loved Superboy comics when he was a kid. I really can't remember a time when I didn't know who Superman was. From George Reeves to Christopher Reeve to Danny Dark, I would be hard pressed to tell you which of those I saw first. When I was a kid, I loved the Kenner Super Powers toy line. (Actually untrue, I am technically an adult, and I still love the Kenner Super Powers toy line!) Adam West and Olan Soule had worked their charms on me, so I already had a Batman figure by this point in my childhood. But we were going to a Birthday party and my Dad was on point to help me get a present for the Birthday Boy. I explained that the Birthday Boy would want the Batman with his "Power Action Bat Punch." My Dad being who he is, grabbed the Batman figure for the Birthday Boy, and in addition grabbed a Superman ("Power Action Punch") and 2 Darkseids ("Power Action Raging Motion" and "Power Action Omega Beam Eyes"). I wondered why he grabbed two of the Darkseids. You see, the Batman and the 1st Darkseid were, of course, for the Birthday Boy. The Superman and the 2nd Darkseid, well, they were for me. So, I have somewhat of an inflated sense of nostalgia and fatherly affection that is transposed unto Superman (and Darkseid lol).

Also would like to thank the members of the original art community who made introductions, chatted with me during the deal, and gave me the opportunity to acquire the page in the first place.

Great sentiment about the father son relationship as it applies to this page where the generation gap between Supermen is at play.  Perez's most significant work and a crown jewel in the collection.

Great pick up.  If you wanted to do a longer write up.. you could scan each panel individually and post separately.  Congrats by the way!

A fabulous page for all the reasons you mentioned. But as often happens in situations like this, the story behind the page surpasses even the art itself. You're a very lucky guy to have had a father like him. For me, that birthday party memory would be worth so much more than any page of art I could ever own. Congratulations, and please custom frame it!

Great page and great story Derek!

I came into DC comics during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and it blew me away. Perez's artwork was a big part of that. As a kid, I had a ritual of reading COIE over at least once a year. It was and still is the greatest comic book series of all time to me. Congrats!

HUGE get, man!  Really happy for you, dude.  Killer example, top to bottom, from one of the THE runs in the history o' comics.  As a DC fan as you are, hard to top.  So much packed in here, from story to art.  Big congrats!
