Castagnaro 1387 Hawkwood’s Great Victory Cover (2019)

I grew up reading military books, and so I was fortunate to have acquired the cover of Castagnaro 1387 by Graham Turner, published by Osprey. This cover was also used as a DPS (pages 68-69) in the Osprey book.

This painted cover depicts the “Veronese Breakthrough” during the historical medieval battle of Castagnaro in 1387 between then the armies of the northern Italian city states of Verona and Padua. Ostasio II da Polenta, with the blue and yellow shield, leads his Veronese troops, aided by the German knight Georg von Schönberg (red/yellow surcoat) and Veronese Ugolino dal Verme (blue surcoat). Francesco il Novello da Carrara, with the white surcoat, tries to stem the Veronese onslaught for Padua. Padua would later win the battle with the help of the English mercenary John Hawkwood. Though after years of conflict, both Verona and Padua would eventually submit to the rule of the city state of Venice in 1405.
