Description

Offered here is a wonderful Conan page by legendary artist, John Buscema. On it, the world's most famous barbarian knocks out a priest in order to borrow his robes. Now he can gain access to The Master who resides in the great temple of Thulsa. Buscema's long association with Conan is one of the artistic highlights of the Marvel Bronze and Copper Ages. This artwork was published in the 1982 Conan the Barbarian Movie Special, an adaptation of the film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film came about on the heels of the successful Marvel comic books of the 1970s, which were adapted from the novels of Robert E. Howard. The artist's high quality draftsmanship is strongly evident here.

Note: Tape is present at the top, bottom and left side of the board. Tape was also used to hold on word balloons in panels 1, 4 and 6. There is a spot of opaque white in panel 5 measuring about 1" square.

About Conan
Conan was first introduced in the pages of the Weird Tales pulp magazine in 1932. 38 years later he made his way to comic books when Marvel published Conan the Barbarian #1 (1970). Marvel published various Conan titles for 23 years before the license moved to Dark Horse. In 2018 the license returned to Marvel.

With nearly 80 years in the popular spotlight, Conan now clearly stands as one of the preeminent American adventure heroes and one of the most well-known to the general public. In addition to being a fixture within the comic book medium, it seems Conan is also destined to be continually reintroduced in feature film. From the classic movies of the 1980s starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, to his most recent incarnation in the 2011 Conan the Barbarian movie, the franchise is firmly entrenched in Hollywood. With Marvel once again guiding Conan's comic book adventures, don't be surprised to see the Disney machine get involved in a future movie franchise for the barbarian hero!

About the Artist
John Buscema is one of the most important artists in Marvel history. He first worked with the company during the 1950s and then returned in the middle of the Silver Age, where he drew Avengers for several years and then made comic book history with his work on Silver Surfer before going on to do long, memorable runs on Thor, Fantastic Four and Conan before returning to do a second long run on Avengers in the 80s. Buscema's work was so good, other artists were encouraged to draw like him and he helped establish a house style that lasted for over two decades.
