This comic is a fusion of genres that are partly noir and partly contemporary western with hints of humor. Scalped provides a brutal analysis of the slow and painful decline of the endangered Native American culture, once a proud lifestyle, now corrupted by poverty, vice, addiction and crime. The story invites the public to immerse themselves in rough situations with individuals inevitably ended up in a self-destructive spiral due to nefarious life choices. Jason Aaron continually plays with readers through multifaceted characterizations and unexpected revelations that force a continuous reconsideration of the various motives; to this are added the murky atmospheres of Guera that reflect the injustice that permeates the life of the characters. The claustrophobic oppression of the composition of the tables is restlessly underlined by murky and muddy colors.
Scalped arouses attention not only for a finely woven detective plot, but also because it denounces a cultural background that the comic medium has failed to represent if not in a superficial and stereotyped way.
