Secret Origins 8 page 17 by Mandrake

Okay, I can't say I really like or even understand her origin, or more specifically, how she got her power. I just read it and I couldn't even briefly explain it. But I love the art, so it's all good for me either way!

The shadow power has always been treated as something mystical by the inhabitants of Talok VIII and so the story is told in that tone. A possible more scientific explanation is the alien machine irradiated Mallor giving him the shdow power. His genes were affected and he passed the ability to control shadows to his descendants.  Also he buried the alien machines in the cave and his descendants must be exposed to the radiation in the cave to awaken their latent shadow power.

Oh, it's definitely something mystical. But given that so many of his descendants must have been affected over time, why is Shadow Lass considered "special" enough to be a hero as a member of the Legion? Technically speaking, couldn't MANY different people have become superheroes (assuming they had the desire to dedicate their lives to that)?

By tradition, like a throne,  one descendant is chosen as the heir and has to journey to the cave and return as the new champion. The cave and its location was a closely guarded secret passed down from champon to champion.  In the Legion's time only two descendants of Mallor were found, Tasmia and Grev. Sardar hedged his bets by having Grev raised in the vicinity of the cave and by giving Tasmia the 'token' that pointed her way to the cave. Sardar died before chosing his heir. The story hints that Grev woulld have probably been the next champion when he was old enough.

Ah, gotcha. I wasn't thinking about how the whole heir thing worked. That makes more sense, for sure. May I also say, your knowledge of all things Legion is impressive indeed! Did you contribute anything to that book "The Legion Companion" by any chance?

I contributed a lot of scans of artwork for the book but no other input.
